Singapore – Little India

Took a stroll one evening down Little India. Passed by many times always in a vehicle and hardly ever walk there. Guess the thought of the crowd deter me. Decided the best time was to go after work on a weekday where may be possibly be less people.

Took the train to Tekka and walked down. Followed the sign to an Indian Temple but it wasn’t very interesting looking. Instead found a very colorful building – the House of Tan Teng Nah an old Chinese house which has been restored and is now so colorfully painted.

Along the walkway of the house flanking Serangoon Road, there are many shops selling flower garlands for the prayers at the many Indian temple there.

There are 3 main Indian Temples along the road.

Sri Veerakaliamma Temple
Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple
Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple

There is only 1 mosque though unless I missed out any along the way or they are in the back lanes.

The interesting thing about Little India is that unlike Chinatown or Geylang Serai, Little India is so colorful with big billboards and electronic advertisement signs that seems to have all disappeared in Chinatown.

There were a number of murals but these 2 giant one at Desker Road and Baboo Lane stands out for its size and creativity.

Soon it got too dark and I decide to call it a day. Will leave exploring the back lanes for another day.
